Congress Approves Conservation-Friendly Highway Bill
WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Highway Bill, a highway and mass transit legislation that will provide approximately $300 billion to states to build and fix roads, was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives last week and is now headed to the Senate. Sportsmen will be interested to know that the legislation includes an unprecedented level of funding dedicated to improving the conservation of fish and wildlife, and access for hunting, fishing and other outdoor recreational activities.
The highway bill typically is thought of only as a vehicle for financing highway construction, repair and public transit and safety programs. But thanks to the work of leading hunting, fishing and conservation organizations and grassroots support from American sportsmen and women, the bill has established an important new precedent for sportsmen.
The "Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users" as this year's version of the bill is titled, provides more than $2 billion in funding for fish and wildlife by supporting programs that reduce wildlife/vehicle accidents, limit the spread of harmful invasive plants, minimize the impact of highway projects on wildlife habitat, increase habitat mitigation projects and improve access to hunting and fishing areas for sportsmen while repairing and creating trails and roads.
